REVISED:  SATURDAY, 12/31/11 - 10:09 PM

Beginning in the 1200s and continuing for the next four hundred years, chaotic conditions and the lack of a strong authority in Japan afforded many village fishermen on the remote islands of Tsushima and Hizen the opportunity to pirate the merchant ships that sailed from China and Korea past their islands toward the bustling ports of Japan.

Their early successes eventually led them to plunder many coastal villages in China and Korea, and the Japanese government’s inability to stop their growing numbers resulted in threats of war against the Ashikaga Shogunate from the Chinese Ming and Korean Joseon emperors.

These hit-and-run pirates became known as “Wako” – the word “Wa” meaning “Japan” or “dwarf” in Chinese, and “ko,” meaning "bandit," "enemy," or "invader."

When the Ming Emperor made it illegal for Chinese merchants to conduct trade with their Japanese counterparts, many of them had storehouses filled with goods.  Facing financial ruin, these merchants abandoned commercial shipping agents and sent clandestine shiploads of cargo manned by  unscrupulous but daring characters willing to face not only the dangers of the voyage, but the price of getting caught, beaten, or executed.

So as feudal warlords continue to battle each other for dominance on the Japanese mainland, the Wako are left virtually in control of the many islands where wealthy merchants are moving vast amounts of illegal cargo between China, Korea, and Japan.

Government officials and pirate hunters are sent to destroy the Wako, but political complexities, corruption, and the pirate ability to hide within the many islands dotting the frontier waters makes it virtually impossible, and hence the resulting game of cat-and-mouse that would play out in the South China Seas from the 13th thru 17th centuries.

WHY?

REVISED:  THURSDAY, 02/07/19 - 4:52 PM - 41-031 WAILEA ST. - WAIMANALO, HAWAII

OBJECTIVES:  As with all of our projects, our goal is to:

- EDUCATE:

- Teach history and give our audiences some background into why things are the way they are.

- Debunk the myths, hoaxes, and "fake news."

- INSPIRE:  We hope to create a sense of wonder to inspire a new generation of Americans to take action and do the right things.  Because our show's supporting characters is a dreamer who aspires to greatness, our audiences can follow their respective paths.

- OUR ACTIONS DEFINE OUR CHARACTER:  We need to show our audiences what road one has to travel in order to achieve our lifelong dreams.  Nothing is promised or guaranteed.  Nothing is free.  One has to suffer some pain to elevate one's life to the next level.

- CALL TO ADVENTURE:  When we are personally challenged by an evil person or called out by evil events (criminal activity, war, etc.) occurring within our community, we need to answer, or the evil will eventually reach us after it destroys our neighbors.
